"All Good Things" May Come to Pass

A long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, Andrew Jarecki directed a film starring Ryan Gosling and Kirsten Dunst. Could it be that it will finally see the light of day?

An international trailer for "All Goods Things" appeared in cyberspace recently and was pointed out to The Playlist by an eagle-eyed and dedicated reader.

"(It') a love story and murder mystery set against the backdrop of a New York real estate dynasty in the 1980s," according to the official synopsis from Groundswell Productions.

The film was bought by Weinstein a couple of years ago, only to languish in their vaults. A frustrated Jarecki (best known for his documentary "Capturing the Friedmans") recently bought back the U.S. distribution rights, with Weinstein maintaining international rights. This trailer would seem to indicate they're poised to exercise those rights, but that's not entirely clear.

"It's all dependent on the domestic plan," Yale Chasin, director of international distribution at Weinstein, told PopcornBiz.

In the meantime, the video has been removed from YouTube, but been reposted on a Facebook page for fans of the film -- go watch it there, we don't have the energy to be part of some cat-n-mouse game.

Weinstein clearly has a soft spot for Gosling, they bought the rights to "Blue Valentine" -- one our favorites of the year thus far -- and plan to release it Dec. 26 for an Oscar push. Maybe Gosling can have a word with Harvey about getting "All Good Things" out the door?

"All Good Things" is based on the true-life story of Robert Durst, scion of a wealthy New York real estate family who at the age of 7 watched his mother fall -- or possibly jump -- off the family's home. He went on to become a cross-dressing suspected murderer who was once arrested trying to shoplift a sandwich and band-aids, despite having $500 in his pocket.

EXCLUSIVE: Ryan Gosling and Kirsten Dunst’s Long-Delayed All Good Things Headed to Magnolia?

After an extended period of limbo that involved director Andrew Jarecki buying back U.S. distribution rights from The Weinstein Company, the Ryan Gosling/Kirsten Dunst true-crime drama All Good Things appears to have found a new home at Magnolia Pictures. Moreover, according to info buried on one theater’s website, the film could make its first appearance as early as next week.

An eagle-eyed tipster points to the Laemmle Theaters site, which has had (see below) AGT quietly debuting July 28 at Encino’s Town Center 5 — one afternoon screening per day. That’s the kind of surreptitious end-run you usually see for Oscar-qualifying documentaries, not highly anticipated dramatic narratives with two young stars like Gosling and Dunst (not to mention a supporting cast that includes Frank Langella and Kristen Wiig). The distributor cited is Magnolia Pictures.

Which is where it gets a little fuzzy. Magnolia president Eamonn Bowles clarified to Movieline this afternoon that “there’s no deal for the film and we’re not releasing it next week” — which is technically true, even though a day off in Encino will earn you bragging rights before the film even makes the fall festival rounds (assuming a week in Encino doesn’t invalidate AGT’s premiere status). Jarecki, who previously worked with Magnolia on his Oscar-nominated 2003 documentary debut Capturing the Friedmans, and his producers at Groundswell Films have yet to respond to requests for comment.

The film is based on the tabloid-ready life of New York real-estate scion Robert Durst, whose wife disappeared in 1982 and who was later acquitted of murdering his neighbor in Texas. (He claimed self-defense, despite having dismembered the body and dumped the parts in Galveston Bay.) AGT features Gosling as the Durst-esque David Marks, Dunst as his never-found wife, and Langella as his controlling father.

The Weinsteins made a deal for the film in 2008, then shelved it during a troubled 2008-09 run that also saw the likes of The Road, Hoodwinked 2 and Shanghai pushed further and further back — indefinitely so, in the latter two cases. Jarecki, who also happened to co-found Moviefone, finally dropped the money to reclaim AGT’s rights earlier this year. “We had a different strategy for how we wanted to release the picture,” TWC distribution boss David Glasser told the LAT at the time. “He purchased the rights back. [… T]his is not something we normally or traditionally do.” In this case, “different strategy” likely means, “We bought Blue Valentine at Sundance and can’t have Gosling and/or Dunst competing against Gosling and/or Michelle Wiliiams come awards season.” Just guessing.

That development made it just a matter of time before All Good Things landed somewhere, anywhere else. And why not Magnolia? One good turn deserves another, though Encino seems an odd starting point. I’d have thought maybe Venice or Toronto.

UPDATE: Laemmle has since removed AGT from next week’s line-up online, but here’s a screencap of the listing as of noon ET today . Keep an eye on it if you want; as long as that 1 p.m. scheduling window remains in the theater screening Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work, rest assured that something is playing there.

Word has it that All Good Things is currently looking for a huge festival release and a second buyer after the Weinsteins gave up on the title.  Any news, John?

I guess the wait is finally over. Grin And previous rumor did happen for a reason.

Magnolia to Distribute 'All Good Things'

By William Yelles

Magnolia Pictures has picked up U.S. rights to Andrew Jarecki's "All Good Things." A December theatrical release is planned. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Ryan Gosling, Kirsten Dunst and Frank Langella star in the murder mystery inspired by a New York missing persons case in the 1980s.

In March, Jarecki bought back the distribution rights from the Weinstein Co. Shot in 2008, "All Good Things" was originally set for a fall 2009 release. Weinstein reportedly paid $6 million to $8 million for the acquisition.

Jarecki previously directed the 2003 documentary "Capturing the Friedmans." He is a producer on "Catfish," which debuted earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival and is set for a release through Rogue Pictures.

Prior to filmmaking, Jarecki founded Moviefone and is perhaps best known as the famous "voice" of the showtimes service.

“With 'All Good Things,' Andrew Jarecki has made the jump to features with the same accomplished, complex and fascinating filmmaking that he demonstrated with 'Capturing the Friedmans,'” said Magnolia Pictures president Eamonn Bowles in a release. “He has gotten amazing performances out of the entire ensemble and delivered a powerful motion picture.”

“Our collaboration with Magnolia on 'Friedmans' was a groundbreaking and wonderful experience and I couldn’t be happier that they are as passionate about 'All Good Things' as we are,” said Jarecki.

Two premieres! I'm just glad Jarecki and Magnolia Pictures give the film it deserves.

I have to say that Kirsten has been 'working her socks off' promoting this film. She's given an incredible number of interviews & the number of air miles she has clocked up travelling back & forth between Los Angeles & New York is amazing.

This jailbird's familiar
By CINDY ADAMS
Last Updated: 11:13 PM, December 20, 2010

Magnolia Pictures promoting a Kirsten Dunst Best Supporting campaign for "All Good Things," which is inspired by the unsolved long-ago fatal disappearance of Kathy Durst, first wife of the real estate family's Robert Durst. This same Robert Durst whose front-page exclusive interview I had when, years later, he was in a Texas jail after some neighbor somehow was found dead. Said Kirsten:

"This film doesn't decide whether or not he killed his first wife. It starts with his youth, working for his father, then it's his marital relationship. We don't see him 'do it' but sort of end up feeling he could've.

"There was a documentary plus much research to understand these people. I spent time with her family, had dinner at their house, listened to them, got their blessings for this film. Nervous at first that this ugly story's coming back to public life, they had kind words for me but were emotional. It was almost cathartic for Kathy's brother.

"Durst, played by Ryan Gosling, is charming, not creepy, not a monster. He loved her. He's likable even though he's terrible. We shot in Connecticut and New York. Before my character disappears, he tells her terrible things like, 'You would have been a good mother.' Then, eating a hamburger, I, as the character, go out and find he killed a dog.

"Their many dogs, all with the same name, went missing. The next scene I go back in that house like I want to kill him. It was eight weeks of rehearsal, and my talking and talking to get into this woman and portray her as one who didn't make easy decisions."

Into retrospection and introspection, beautiful Kirsten says: "We all must find our own path. It's a difficult time to live in. Actors' jobs require you to be open to all situations. Open to everything and OK with criticism. It's impossible to fill all these roles required for an actor. You must learn how to protect yourself."

And about Christmas?

"I'm part German, so my mother makes mashed potatoes and bratwurst. It's very festive. We play games. Santa's always been in my life. When I was young and didn't care how Santa came, I remember he arrived at our house in a fire truck."
