Celebrities vow to conquer cancer with 'Stand Up' performances

http://www.usatoday.com/life/people/2008-07-28-cancer-celebrities_N.htm

Hollywood has had it with cancer.
Jennifer Aniston, America Ferrera, David Cook, Casey Affleck, Meryl Streep, Lance Armstrong, Scarlett Johansson and Forest Whitaker are just some of the celebrities who are taking a stand against cancer during a one-hour television special to be aired on ABC, CBS and NBC on Sept. 5 at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

Stand Up to Cancer has attracted A-list names to participate in the broadcast.

The effort began when a handful of members of the Entertainment Industry Foundation, which addresses various health issues but emphasizes cancer research and prevention, and the Noreen Fraser Foundation, which works to raise awareness about women's cancers, each discussed raising funds via a television broadcast. Soon, more individuals joined each effort, and eventually the two groups came together with the idea for SU2C.

"A lot of us had similar ideas at the same time. And we had some connection with each other," says SU2C producer Laura Ziskin, a breast cancer survivor who joined the effort early. "Every single person involved in this is touched by this disease in one way or another."

Other celebrities confirmed to appear on the broadcast: Christina Applegate, Josh Brolin, Katie Couric, Dana Delany, Fran Drescher, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Kirsten Dunst, Elle Fanning, Jon Favreau, Charles Gibson, Neil Patrick Harris, Salma Hayek, Masi Oka, Danica Patrick, Christina Ricci, Robin Roberts, Hilary Swank, Charlize Theron, Goran Visnjic and Brian Williams.

More talent will be announced later. Ziskin describes the show format as "edu-tainment" and explains that her goal is to make the broadcast lively and instructive from start to finish. "There's humor, there's music, there's film pieces, there's lots and lots of celebrities," she says of the fundraiser.

As for recruiting stars, "if people are available, they are coming," Ziskin says. "They want to participate."

And while the producer says nothing should be missed, she insists, "You don't want to miss Homer and Marge Simpson."

Many stars already have started rallying around the cause. At major league baseball's All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium recently, Sex and the City's Sarah Jessica Parker and singer Sheryl Crow introduced a PSA soliciting donations for SU2C by texting contributions. The PSA, which stars Jessica Biel, is being shown at stadiums nationwide throughout the baseball season. On the Internet, video segments with the cast from The Daily Show can be seen at standup2cancer.org. Other interactive features are available on the site, which will continue to operate after the TV broadcast.

After all, Ziskin says, "we hope that Sept. 5 is just the beginning."

In the last 50 years, great things have been done in the treatment of cancer.  Colin cancer can be somewhat checked with early checkups and other cancer treatments (esp. as to prostrate cancer) have moved ahead.  Many celebrities have contributed time and money to these tremendous developments.  I think some of the smart, younger crowd could  do quite well in looking for answers to the cancer puzzle, perhaps by proceeding to look beyond the genetic theory (if they could get funding).

Kirsten is always a responsible person---she is involved politically, with helping kids, and with helping people discover more abt. cancer.  I think she was somehow even involved with aero space also. A good heart I think.  And I bet she does a lot of good we don't know abt.  because  she is quiet abt. it.

Thats true, many people work silently for a good thing.
Celebs use their celebrity to motivate other people to do the same good things / mostly donate money, but quite some money donated by celebs is donated "silently"/ anonymously.

I think she tried last year or so (maybe year before that).  She might  read up on the situation, and see what plan of attack (or combination) would work. Exercise, yoga, patch, diet, etc?  For sure, smoking does not improve your health over the long term.  And drinking and smoking together increase chances of bad things.  But, everyone tells me it is very hard.  But too hard for Kirsten Dunst?  No.

I think that its quite difficult to stop smoking if youre used to.... This is just a normal to smoke one when exiting the house, drinking a coffee.....
I must admit 'I am a nonsmoke but quite some of my friends smoke so I know how difficult is to stop it. Some girls are even skared that they get more weight if they stop smoking.

I think if Kirsten really wants she can for sure stop it - even if this will be very hard. But - maybe - she just likes it too much and so she would not want to stop.

Celebs are always in spotlights and should give a good example... This is the one side - the other is that they should have a private life - and private is also the decision to smoke or drink.

For health smoking is quite bad, but this is another story....

She tried to quit smoking several times if I remember it correctly (she mentioned it in interviews years back), but maybe it's too hard to do it.  Anyway, it's still her choice to make.

Figuring out a way to beat smoking is a personal thing--a puzzle that's kind of different for everyone.  I suspect KD likes puzzles, and she is smart, and it is imp.  Maybe too hard to quit one way, and better another way?  We will see.

Remembering that quite some people are only occasionally smokers it will be difficult to know if she will smoke less.
Just like it seems now she is a regular smoker  Undecided
