Sofia Coppola and Kirsten Dunst To Re-Team On New Project ‘Secret Door’

The twitter account of American Zoetrope, the production company run by Sofia’s father Francis Ford Coppola, which has backed all four of her pictures, announced a few hours ago that Coppola’s got a new film in the works, entitled “Secret Door,” and that Kirsten Dunst, who starred in both “The Virgin Suicides” and “Marie Antoinette” for the director, has signed on to appear in the film. The exact tweet reads: “Happy to announce that Kirsten Dunst has agreed to be in Sofia Coppola‘s new film ‘Secret Door’. Script is still being finished. Stay tuned!”

There are no further details on the film at this stage—“Secret Door” doesn’t apply to any obvious existing property that she could be adapting (there’s an Enid Blyton book, and an Arctic Monkeys song, but a link with either is unlikely), and the only unmade Coppola project that we’re aware of was a “European vampire” tale derailed by the success of the “Twilight” series, so this would appear to be something entirely new.

That's very interesting & unexpected (not least because there was no hint that Sofia had a new project on the go).

No real info in that message but I'm guessing it'll (presumably) be next year before filming takes place, given that the script isn't even finished yet.

I also find it interesting that Kirsten has agreed to appear in the film before the script has been finished. I doubt there are many (any?) other directors who Kirsten would sign up for a role in a film with an unfinished script.

I wonder what kind of film/role this is? Possibly something showing the 'darker' side of Kirsten that Sofia has mentioned in the past.

This re-collaboration is indeed unexpected and intriguing. Being my cautious self, I wouldn't say the deal is sealed unless there're more confirmations from any mainstream sources (Variety, Hollywood Reporter etc.), but American Zoetrope's twitter did give more information re Secret Door, even a glimpse of the unfinished script (which is unusual to say the least).

Maybe Spoiler Alert:

I was dubious of this story when I first heard it & even more so after reading that so-called "script". Anyway Kirsten has now confirmed that Sofia isn't working on a script for a film called "Secret Door".

Something's just too good to be sure. I have a bad feeling after reading the 'opening scene'. Claire and a suicidal charming man? Anyone sense a little bit Elizabethtown here? Roll Eyes

Guess the world is just too curious about Kirsten or Sofia's next mysterious project, even if they are not working together this time.
