A Chat With the Writer-Director of ‘Bachelorette’
By BROOKS BARNES
PARK CITY, Utah — “I’m warning you, I’m operating on four hours of sleep,” said Leslye Headland, the Kathleen Turner-voiced writer-director of “Bachelorette,” a lacerating comedy that will have its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on Monday. “Seriously, you’re speaking to a crazy person right now.”
Nice try, Ms. Headland. Over the next 30 minutes, she thoughtfully laid down a type of dissertation on how mainstream movies have come to portray women and how she methodically tried to resist that in “Bachelorette,” which is adapted from her hit Off Broadway play and stars Kirsten Dunst, Isla Fisher and Lizzy Caplan.
If this was Ms. Headland with a foggy head, we would be afraid to encounter her fully rested, or at least fully caffeinated.
“Bachelorette” comes to Sundance with a some baggage — namely “Bridesmaids.” Yes, they are both bridal comedies. No, they are nothing alike. “I admit that I am a little concerned about expectations,” Ms. Headland said. “My movie is nasty, dark, complicated and a little bizarre. If people come in expecting ‘Bridesmaids’ they may have a heart attack. Or they might hate it and leave.” (We’ve seen it. Won’t happen.)
“Bachelorette,” which counts Will Ferrell as a producer, looks at three mean girls who reunite at the wedding of their childhood friend, a woman they not-so-lovingly call Pig Face. No “Bridesmaids”-style toilet humor here — Ms. Headland’s script is smarter than that — but get ready for gluttonous use of drugs and lots of claws-popped put-downs. James Marsden, Adam Scott and Kyle Bornheimer co-star as groomsmen, adding a whiff of “The Hangover.”
Beneath their train-wreck exteriors, the three women at the center of Ms. Headland’s movie are actually quite sweet, if damaged. “I wanted to explore the idea of people who are good no matter how hard they work at being bad,” she said. “At the same time, I wanted a feeling of suspense at the end. Will these women turn out to be fine? Not clear. Hopefully, people will leave worried about them, but in a hopeful way.”

SUNDANCE: Kirsten Dunst, Lizzy Caplan talk 'Bachelorette'
By: Stuart Oldham
Published Mon, January 23, 2012, 6:33 PM
Kirsten Dunst and Lizzy Caplan stopped by the Variety Studio on Monday to discuss "The Bachelorette" hours before the film's Sundance premiere.
"For a first time director, she had such confidence," Dunst said of writer-director Leslye Headland.
"The Bachelorette" tells the story of a group of friends celebrating the engagement of a bride-to-be (Rebel Wilson). Isla Fisher and James Marsden also star.
"It's about girlfriends coming together," Dunst says, looking to her co-star.
"Women are not funny, naturally," Caplan deadpans.
Caplan, who has another wedding-themed movie at Sundance ("Save the Date"), says acting in low-budget pics are typically a blast.
"Everybody really needs to want to be there, ya know?"
Dunst agreed. "When you have a small budget to work with, you only get like two takes, three takes at the most, so we would move through things," the actress said. "And I think really helps keep energy and performance levels on a better kind of scale."
"Don't lie to him! It was a non-stop party!" Caplan laughs.
"The Bachelorette," produced by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay, premieres tonight at the Eccles theater.

Weinstein Co. Chief Operating Officer David Glasser said that the company was interested in the raunchy Kirsten Dunst wedding-weekend comedy "Bachelorette." And Glasser said that if the Weinstein Co. acquired it, it will make the movie a day-and-date release in theaters and on cable systems' on-demand services.

No please anyone but the Weinsteins, they will never release the film.
What do they mean by "day-and-date release in theaters and on cable systems' on-demand services"? Surely they are not planning to release the film on both on the same day?

Sounds like it. I'm still not sure about this Weinsteins thing, but I've heard that this year only twenty-two left Sundance were sold. Apparently, Bachelorette is too "dark" and "mean-spirited" for some of the buyers looking only for commercial appeal.

Weinstein Company Names New Shingle Radius And Acquires Edgy Sundance Comedy ‘Bachelorette’
The Weinstein Company (TWC) announced today that its new label, Radius-TWC, has acquired from Strategic Motion Ventures the North American distribution rights to the comedy BACHELORETTE, the debut feature from writer/director Leslye Headland. Adapted by Headland from her acclaimed stage play of the same name, BACHELORETTE had its world premiere in the 2012 Sundance Film Festival Premieres section. The film is the first to be acquired in the open marketplace by Radius-TWC, which was created in fall 2011 to bring new films and other specialty entertainment to audiences simultaneously across multiple platforms. The announcement was made by Radius-TWC Co-Presidents Tom Quinn and Jason Janego.

I'm not going to lie, I'm not at all happy about this. After the All Good Things debacle I really hoped Kirsten would never get lumbered with the Weinsteins again.
Get set for a (very small-scale) 2014 release for the film.

Well I was wrong about the date.
The film is set to be released in America on June 1st this year. Looks like it'll be a simultaneous release on Video On Demand & in a limited number of cinemas.
